Empowering Extension:GAERS Volunteer Agents Ace Their First Digital Exam

The Global Agricultural Extension and Rural Services (GAERS) has achieved another important milestone in our journey to strengthen agricultural advisory services across Nigeria. On Sunday, [insert date], we conducted the first-ever GAERS Extension Agents’ E-Learning Final Exam — a proud moment that reflects how far we’ve come in building a digital-first, community-driven model for agricultural extension.

A Hybrid Learning Experience

The exam was carried out in a hybrid format that mirrors the way GAERS operates: bridging digital innovation with real community presence. Eleven of our volunteer agents sat physically at a venue in Sokoto, while four others joined remotely via Google Forms. This flexibility showed the power of our Integrated Digital Advisory Platform (IDAP) to connect and support participants across locations, whether online or offline.

What the Exam Covered

The exam tested Modules 1–7 of our E-Learning curriculum, touching on areas central to effective agricultural extension: soil health, sustainable farming practices, water management, safe post-harvest handling, farmer engagement, extension delivery, and monitoring and evaluation. With 20 multiple-choice questions set against a benchmark pass mark of 60%, the goal was not only to measure knowledge, but to build confidence in the ability of agents to apply what they’ve learned.

Outstanding Results & Reflections

The results spoke volumes about both the dedication of our volunteers and the effectiveness of the GAERS training model. Four agents achieved a perfect score of 100%, while others scored 95%, 90%, and 80% respectively. Of course, some fell short of the pass mark, but their efforts were equally commendable — and they will be given another opportunity to retake the exam in the coming week.

What stood out most were the reflections from the agents themselves:

These voices affirm what we have believed from the start: with the right tools, localized content, and culturally relevant delivery, anyone can become a confident source of knowledge and support for farmers.

Building Toward Certification

This milestone is not an end, but a step toward something bigger. The E-Learning exam now lays the foundation for GAERS’ Certification of Volunteer Extension Agents, which will be officially launched as part of our one-year anniversary celebrations. These certificates will not only recognize knowledge gained but also encourage continuous learning and strengthen the credibility of extension agents in their local communities.

Looking Ahead

For GAERS, this achievement validates our core belief: digital learning, when combined with community-based extension, can bridge the agricultural knowledge gap in Nigeria.
